Our own Beijing correspondent
August 19, 2008 - Steve Murch
Alpena native Margaret Mack has been our “Beijing correspondent,” as I’ve dubbed her during our e-mail exchanges. She has been incredibly generous by sending along photos of her sightseeing journeys sandwiched between work and sleep. “Sandwiched” is probably a pretty good word since she works 12 hour days.
In our exchange she comes across as a very humble person, and I’ve gathered from conversations with people who know/knew her that she indeed is that way. You could forgive her if she flashed a bit of ego when you look at her accomplishments. But I don’t get any of that from her.
She’s worked every Olympics since the Winter Games in 1992 at Albertville, France. She’s won three Sports Emmy Awards. And she’s worked NFL games.
I heard third hand (Bill Speer relayed what Margaret’s brother, Mike, told him) that she had worked broadcasts with John Madden. So I posed the question to her about what she had done. I pretty much asked for my own information, but I think people would enjoy. So Margaret, forgive me for sharing — though I’m not sure that many people read this so you might be safe.
She worked nine years on the FOX broadcasts by Pat Summerall and John Madden. She did all the regular season games, playoffs, NFC championship games — and the Super Bowl the years FOX had the game. She was in either Detroit or Dallas on Thanksgiving; at least she knew where she’d be on Thanksgiving, though working that day does get tiresome I’m sure. She also wrote that she is still working for FOX doing football, but has cut back on the number of games she works.
I hope readers of the paper have enjoyed seeing her photos and finding out a bit about what it’s like to be working during the Olympics.
