Lots of love for the Loft
July 28, 2008 - Diane Speer
I’ve been meaning all summer long to get to Art in the Loft in downtown Alpena and see the new SummerView exhibit. It’s not like the loft is located on the other side of town from The News office - just a quick walk and I’m there.
For some reason (I’ll chalk it up to continued busyness), I did not actually follow through with my good intentions until today. But, wow! I was totally blown away when I took the Center Building’s elevator up to the third floor, the elevators doors opened and I stepped into the loft space. It is such a creative environment, and since it first came into existence as a temporary gallery seven years ago, it has become a true community center for the arts.
I think this summer, more than any other in the past, the unique space has been filled with great activities and art. While there, I spent some time talking with Gallery Coordinator Leandra Dziesinski, who unfortunately heads off to Northeast Michigan University in the fall to compete a bachelor of arts degree in marketing. Her current job seems like such a good fit for someone with her creative bent, and she will be surely missed.
I also spent some time talking with Karen Wenzel, who saw the vision for the loft right from the start and provided the physical space and significant backing for it. She has remained an integral part of all the good stuff happening there ever since. Colorful works by 35 different artists, a variety of art workshops, a rotating schedule of changing art exhibits and special activities like an upcoming collaborative mural project between the loft, Friends Together and ARMC Cancer Center have filled the summer schedule.
It shouldn’t surprise me, but I returned to my office creatively refreshed and extremely impressed with what this special loft space has to offer and the important place it has gained in the community.
