Here’s to live theatre
June 19, 2008 - Diane Speer
It’s always fun to meet and then see a whole new company perform at Thunder Bay Theatre. Artistic Director Mark Butterfuss has assembled a seemingly likeable group of four guys and two gals for the summer months. “State Fair,” the first show of the summer season, opened yesterday. Because of a scheduling conflict, I’m not catching the show until today, but I am expecting good things between the new company and local favorites Dave Usher and Karen Thompson.
The fun doesn’t stop at TBT though. Alpena Civic Theatre also opens a new show this week (Friday to be exact). “Deathtrap” is being put up as a fund-raiser to help cover the cost of the theatre’s major seating renovation project that was completed earlier this spring. Just a five-person show, it too looks to be equally entertaining.
I’m not sure it was a wise call by the powers that be to have two shows open the exact same week, but hopefully the viewing public will be supportive anyway. We here in Northeast Michigan are quite fortunate to have two live theatres. However, attendance is crucial for the financial well-being of both.
So here’s to live theatre in Alpena and all the great shows both Alpena Civic Theatre and Thunder Bay Theatre offer us right here in our own backyard!
