Something to do in Alpena

June 16, 2008 - Steve Murch
I helped the Lions Club sell drinks at Riverfest on Saturday evening. The Lions didn’t have enough help, so my dad recruited me to help. We had the 5-8 shift, so it wasn’t all that busy.

Apparently Friday night the place was packed and the Lions had their largest sales ever. My dad and I were finished before things got busy in the tent Saturday night, so I’m curious how things went later on.

We did get to chat with Lynn Kolasa early in the evening and she marveled at how packed the tent was and how many people there were Friday. She said her only complaint was that she forgot her camera so she could take photos.

Her reason for that was she wants people to see that there is more going on than things for retirees. And, that people in their 20s and 30s do go out and enjoy themselves when the events arrive.

Well, we’re in the middle of the events season. This weekend is another Concert in the Park; the following weekend is Blues Festival; after that it’s the Fourth of July events and Maritime Festival. Then more Concerts in the Park, not to mention the other concerts by City Band and those hosted by Thunder Bay Arts Council.

And don’t forget the Brown Trout Festival and Art on the Bay. To top it off, Friday Night Downtown hits Alpena next week, too.

While it’s not the big city, there is plenty to do if you just spend a few minutes to look for them.

Here’s hoping you get out and enjoy summer events in Alpena.
