Taking time off for fun

June 9, 2008 - Diane Speer
In a departure from the norm, I took last Friday afternoon off from the newspaper to participate in a beading workshop taught by Kathy Shomo at Trinity Episcopal Church. What fun! At the request of Maggie Michaud of Trinity, I had earlier done a preview story about the workshop, and decided at the time that it might be a good idea to participate. I convinced several friends to sign-up for the workshop with me, and at the end of the afternoon, eureka! We all four had some stunning new jewelry, but especially my friend, Sarah Gohl, who displayed a real aptitude and eye for color and design. Who knew such artistic talent lay hidden?

Both Shomo and her helper/friend came from Pittsburgh, Pa. to lead the workshop, which just happens to be near where I grew up. In fact, one of the two Alpena visitors lives in the same small suburb of Pittsburgh where my father was born and raised (Crafton), so it was nice to get a glimpse of home via an unexpected source. Oh yeah, it also was enjoyable rubbing in just a bit the fact that the Detroit Reg Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Yep, it’s definitely a good idea to occasionally take a little time off for fun.
