If I live past 100

May 19, 2008 - Diane Speer
Managing Editor Steve Murch reminded me today that it's been quite awhile since I've submitted a blog, so I figured it was about time to remedy that. I love the blog concept, but squeezing it into my already hectic days here at the newspaper doesn't always happen.

That's not to say there's not lots of worthwhile things to write about, beginning with the luncheon held yesterday at the Alpena Senior Citizens Center in honor of May being Older Americans Month. My husband and I attended the event, and were simply amazed by the entertainment. It was delivered by 102-year-old Mable Boettcher, who resides in Hillman. For at least 15 minutes, Mable regaled the nearly 200 guests in attendance with her Minnie Pearl impersonation that included a series of jokes that cracked just about everyone up. The amazing part was that her punch lines were all delivered without any hesitation and no notes - just completely off the top of her head.

Of course, Mable also donned a hat with the signature Minnie Pearl price tag still hanging from it. And at the end of her segment, she started belting out "Hey, Good Lookin', What's You Got Cookin." Again, she had many in the crowd captivated and joining her with singing that old-time favorite.

If I live pass 100, which obviously is a big if, I hope I can just as spry as Mable.
