Keep our public funding for public schools

Jan. 21-27 was designated “School Choice Week.” Michigan, under the influence of Betsy DeVos, has been a leader in the School Choice Movement. No other state has more for-profit charter schools than Michigan. I’d like to share what that has done to Michigan’s children.

Since charter schools have proliferated, school segregation has increase. According to the Associated Press, Michigan is tied with Mississippi for “extreme racial isolation” for African-American students. Is this the result we want? No wonder the NAACCP has called for a moratorium on new charter schools.

The proliferation of charters has coincided with a dramatic drop in our state’s performance on the National Assessment of 2003, Michigan students ranked 28th and 27th in reading and math. In 2015, Michigan dropped to 41st and 42nd.

Please consider that tax money allocated to charter schools is money taken away from local public schools, Charter schools receive public funds, but operate without public accountability.

Parents have every right to choose schools for their children. But only public schools should receive public tax dollars.
