Charter schools should face same scrutiny

I am writing to you in regards to the article ‘Lawmakers may repeal state’s school intervention law.’ With the new appointment of Betsy DeVos for the Secretary of Education position in Trump’s cabinet, I have to wonder more about charter schools. Betsy DeVos is a believer of not only charter schools, but also in little oversight of them as well. This effect has been disastrous for Detroit, in terms of education standards and a waste of our taxpayer money.

Other parts of the country have faired better by adopting rules that have been proven to work well in other parts of the country, including New Orleans. The New Orleans rules include a fair choice system, overseeing the expulsion system, and excludes the picking of only the top students. The point is government oversight is key, including the closing down of failing charter schools.

Charter schools are here to stay for good with Betsy Devos at the helm. We need to stay strong and keep charter schools accountable, transparent, and make sure our teachers are unionized. If charter schools are not living up to their neighbor public school scores and ratings, then they need to go. Our children are too important, this must be addressed now, not tomorrow.
