Editorial cartoon helps fan flames of hatred

With the bitterness of the recent divisive election behind us, and with President Trump promising to be “a president for all the people,” one can only hope that the country can begin to heal the wounds the election has served to open.

Unfortunately, recent news reports tell us that defamatory, bigoted activities have increased significantly since the election. My 15-year-old granddaughter in Chicago reports that a swastika was written on her desk Friday.

Your political cartoon featuring a derogatory, stereotypical, defamatory illustration of a Mom and young son does little to help cool the emotions. It illustrates an obviously black family with a devoted mom and an angry kid with saggy pants and backward hat. In fact, I feel such an illustration only serves to fan the flames of the bigotry felt by some in our nation.

You can do better.

You have done better.
