City Band hits a high note at 100 years of music

For 100 years, the “sounds of music” have filled the air of Alpena.

For 100 years, men and women who share the passion of making music have volunteered their time and talent to Alpena’s City Band.

Today’s band is an interesting blend of young and old. Yet, whether a member has been playing an instrument for 25 years or just 25 months, it matters not. When you put the two together in a band setting, the music from each instrument blends together in a beautiful sound that Alpena residents have been enjoying in a variety of settings, from the Bay View Park Bandshell to holiday parades.

At its roots, the City Band helped stir the patriotic fever among the populace as it escorted young recruits down the street and to the Alpena Depot, where the young men would gather on the train that would transport them off to World War I.

Much has changed. Today, the band’s performances are in a much more relaxed setting. One thing hasn’t changed, however, and that is the effect the music created by the band has on people. Good music can stir the soul, and that is what seems to happen every Thursday when the City Band performs.

One hundred years is a milestone to be recognized. Congratulations to everyone who has been part of the band over the years.
