Allor, Stamas stay connected to their districts

Good dialogue, open discussion and frank exchanges always make for a productive meeting.

Such was the case earlier this week in Alpena when superintendents from Alpena, Alcona and Iosco counties gathered together to meet with State Rep. Sue Allor and State Sen. Jim Stamas.

As might be expected, school funding was a huge concern of the superintendents gathered, but so were many other hot topics in the news these days like student safety, guns in schools and career and technical training courses.

“There was a lot of diversity in the dialogue between everyone,” Stamas said about the meeting. “We covered a lot of different aspects.”

Which is good. Allor and Stamas are no strangers to the needs of area schools. Both have been active educational proponents on many different fronts, and regularly make sure they stay connected with local educational folks.

Meetings like this week, however, help to solidify that relationship all the more. By working closely together now, problems and misunderstandings can hopefully be averted later.

“Through the meeting positive relationships develop and everyone shared a common interest in advancing the education of children within our region and state,” AMA-ESD Superintendent Scott Reynolds said. “Superintendents look forward to scheduling more meetings like these in the future.”

Our state legislators certainly demonstrate a willingness to be accessible and accommodating.

As evidence by meetings like this, when they head back to Lansing they already are well versed on local issues and concerns.

Both Stamas and Allor have our respect for regularly making themselves available to their constituents.
