Foundations helping our communities prosper
Foundations can make a huge difference for those they choose to make awards to.
Over the years a number of area governments, public service agencies and special projects have benefited from their gifts. This week Alpena Public Schools was the latest recipient of a foundation’s generosity, to the tune of $80,000. The grant was from the Besser Foundation and will be coupled with another $20,000 district officials previously had received from the foundation.
In Alpena, the grants literally convert dreams into reality for district students. Among the things district officials hope to do with the grants will be to purchase some Chromebook tablets for students, help the robotics programs in the schools and implement Project Lead the Way in kindergarten through fifth grade, and expand that program in sixth through eighth grade.
“We really appreciate the support from the Besser Foundation and it really gives us the opportunity to do some things we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise,” Superintendent John VanWagoner said in a news story this week.
This region is blessed with numerous strong foundations that serve communities. The foundations have been blessed with generous donations from philanthropic minded people.
Thanks to these visionaries, our communities can grow and prosper.
When that happens, it is a win-win for all of us.
