Area shows its giving spirit again
Thank you Northeast Michigan for your generous hearts.
At a time when people are rushing here and there to make their Christmas purchases, it was nice last week to pause for Giving Tuesday — a time for our philanthropic spirit to be displayed during the holiday season.
And boy was it ever! Across the 10 counties of the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan $120,668 was raised for area nonprofits. It was an amazing 24 hours of non-stop giving and for the organizations that received gifts, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Let’s put things in perspective for a minute. In 2015 CFNEM officials participated for the first time in Giving Tuesday. At that time $30,345 was raised from a total of 197 gifts. Last year $41,187 was raised from a total of 495 gifts. This year the $120,668 was raised from a total of 760 gifts.
The success and percentage of increase from year to year is nothing short of amazing.
And yet, why should it surprise us? Our region always has been known for its generosity and this is yet another example of our big hearts.
