A fitting tribute to Pettalia

Honoring former State Rep. Peter Pettalia with a portion of US-23 named after him seems like a great idea.

The section of highway that would be named in his honor would run between Maple Drive and Misiak Highway.

“Naming part of that route through Pete’s home county is a fitting tribute to a life well lived and the tremendous impact he had on so many lives,” State Sen. Jim Stamas said.

Pettalia was killed 13 months ago in a motorcycle accident on his way back to Lansing. During his tenure as state representative he worked closely with Michigan Department of Transportation officials on projects that would benefit Northeast Michigan.

While legislation sponsored by Stamas and State Rep. Sue Allor that would approve the honor for Pettalia still needs formally approved, no one expects it to be a problem.

Pettalia served three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2011 until his death. He previously served as Presque Isle Township supervisor for 16 years and as a volunteer firefighter for the East Grand Lake Fire Department for 15 years.
