Solution for Lakeside Park a sensible plan

In the summer, hoop dreams often are realized at a place like Lakeside Park in Rogers City.

And while those basketball dreams often might be accompanied by some bravado, some music and some bragging rights, foul language need not, and should not, be a part of the setting.

We strongly support and enjoy places like Lakeside Park, where basketball is played from dawn to dusk. Anything that gets people outside, exercising and participating in group activity is a pursuit we would be an advocate for. However, as quick as we would support such activities, we also would promote common sense and respect among those who use the courts.

In places like Lakeside where residences are close by, we would urge players to keep the music to respectable levels and play music that would not be offensive to anyone who might pass by and hear it. Regarding language on the court, no cussing, swearing or foul language should ever be tolerated.

That’s why we support, and like the new set of guidelines developed by City Manager Joe Hefele to address concerns at the park. We believe they are governed by common sense, address the needs of both residents and ball players, and grant authority to the players to self-govern themselves. This compromise allows everyone to enjoy the facility for what it was intended to be — a basketball court.

We always want Lakeside to be a place where hoops prevail. We want those playing there to have fun and show off their skills.

In doing so, however, we only ask that the language is clean and the noise considerate to those living nearby.

Hefele has developed a solid working plan for this important city recreational spot. We hope council agrees.
