Mueller should expand scope of his investigation

After it was revealed the Justice Department has named former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to head an investigation into alleged contact between Russian officials and President Donald Trump’s associates, some in the media and politics expressed concern. Pointing to some special counsel probes in the past, they worried aloud that Mueller will expand the scope of his investigation.

Let us hope he does. Remember, it is not only Trump and those in his campaign who have jeopardized national secrets. It is not only some, such as one-time national security adviser Michael Flynn, who have had questionable contacts with foreign governments.

Mueller should get to the very bottom of allegations swirling around the current occupant of the White House, of course. That is vital.

But a variety of other issues involving security and specifically Russia, merit more investigation, too. It is not necessary to note they involve Hillary and Bill Clinton.

Some of those concerned about Mueller’s appointment fear a Pandora’s Box has been opened.

Perhaps that is precisely what Americans need right now.
