O’Connor a good choice for Alcona superintendent

Dan O’Connor is a great selection to become Alcona Community Schools’ new superintendent once Shawn Thornton retires March 1.

Meeting earlier this week in special session, the board of education agreed as well, voting 6-1 to place O’Connor into that role. Steve Yokom cast the dissenting vote — as he wanted to see the district advertise the vacancy first and see who expressed interest in it before making a final decision. Yokom made it clear, however, he thought highly of O’Connor.

So do lots of others, which is a common thread surrounding O’Connor. Just last week he received the endorsement of Thornton.

“I don’t get a vote but it would be my recommendation for this board to highly consider O’Connor as a replacement for me,” she said.

Thornton said O’Connor is very informed about the school’s processes and state education, and is a hard worker for the school who has dedicated his career to bettering the environment for teachers and students.

With Thornton’s retirement coming during the school year, transitionally O’Connor’s selection should be a smooth one for students, teachers, board and the public. He will be able to provide continuity at a critical time when everyone begins concentrating on the final few months of the school year.

In our estimation O’Connor has displayed the leadership, wisdom and fairness needed to guide a school district in these turbulent times in education.

We wish him well.
