Let freedom soar

The sound of freedom filled the air again this week over Northeast Michigan.

The Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center was hosting two squads of Air National Guard units and their jets as the groups were practicing air-surface weapon training over Lake Huron.

The Guard was making use of restricted space in this region to give the units training in scenarios where the jets would be identifying pseudo “hostile” boats for targeting.

The sorties were to end today.

We often take for granted the Alpena CRTC. Training exercises such as this, however, should serve as a reminder for all of us how fortunate we are to have a training facility of this quality located here. The base offers a wide experience of different training opportunities – from land targets at Camp Grayling to water targets in Lake Huron all within quick flying distance from the base.

In a world where trouble seems to lurk around every corner, training such as this is important to our national security. We’re glad to play a small role in hosting the men and women who keep our country free.
