It’s up in the air for GOP presidential candidate

Both Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson are threatening to leave the Republican Party if it does not nominate them for president. Presumably, they mean they would run for president as “third-party” candidates.

Hillary Clinton, who almost undoubtedly will be the Democrat nominee for president, must be ecstatic. An independent run by Trump, and possibly one by Carson, could siphon enough conservative votes away from the Republican nominee to hand the presidency to Clinton on a silver platter.

Let us hope Carson, who has demonstrated far more level-headedness than Trump, reconsiders.

Trump probably will not. That means his supporters will have to do the thinking for him if he does not win the GOP nomination. It will be they, not he, called upon to exercise the maturity to avoid splitting the Republican Party and giving the election to the liberal Democrat candidate.
