Snyder makes right call on Syrian refugees

Gov. Rick Snyder was correct this week to suspend efforts of bringing Syrian refugees to Michigan.

While the decision certainly is a controversial one, it is the correct one. Until the U.S. can take a pause from all the emotion from the Paris bombings and re-examine its immigration policy to ensure the proper vetting of all immigrants, now isn’t the time to continue down a path everyone might regret later.

No one can accuse Snyder of being insensitive. No Republican governor in the country has been more accepting of immigrants over the past year than he.

And, until this week, the governor and his staff were working to include Syrian refugees in relocation efforts around the state.

Then came Paris.

Snyder was wise to quickly step in and take action. Rather than continue with emotions at an all-time high, he wisely called for a “time out” to allow the federal government time to pause and review its immigration policies and the vetting process. Following that Michigan officials might again consider playing host to the Syrian refugees.

“Michigan is a welcoming state and we are proud of our rich history of immigration,” Snyder said. “But our first priority is protecting the safety of our residents.”

We agree. It only makes common sense.
