Congress needs to push Obama to follow the law of the land

Not long after President Barack Obama announced his plan to allow millions of illegal immigrants to stay in the United States, a federal judge in Texas ruled he could not implement it.

That was no problem for Obama. Instead of making it official, the administration has simply failed to enforce laws requiring illegal immigrants be apprehended and deported.

During the past three years, federal authorities have decreased deportations steadily. At the current pace, only about 236,000 will be sent home during this fiscal year. That would be the lowest number in about a decade.

Obama and his minions have made it clear they view the law of the land as whatever they say it is. Witness the government’s refusal to enforce some laws against illegal drugs – and its active encouragement of banks to serve drug dealers in states where marijuana is illegal. Banks are prohibited by law from doing that.

Members of Congress of both parties have expressed dismay at Obama’s scofflaw actions. They can do little to stop him, it appears – but they should make it plain behavior like his from his successor will not be tolerated.
