DONNA MARIE AVERY

Donna Marie (Maki) Avery, 72, of Alpena died following an extended illness on Dec. 1, 2017 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena.

Donna was born Sept. 17, 1945 in Newberry to parents Mary (Elizabeth) Deverney and John Maki. After marrying in 1956, she gave birth to eight children, and later married Gary Avery.

Donna and Gary settled on the outskirts of Alpena, enjoying a simple life together.

Known for her crafts and hard work, Donna was loved by everyone who knew her. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, bike riding, several crafting hobbies, taking her greatest pride in her children and grandchildren, as well as her membership with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

A longtime member under the ministries of Pastor Charles Price, Donna remained active in the community as long as she was able.

She is survived by children; Michael Betterly, Theresa (Richard) (Betterly) King, Lisa Betterly, Roy Betterly, Elliot Betterly; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a brother Dave (Rose) Crawford.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Gary; three of her children, Kathy, Gilbert and John Betterly.

Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place in the spring of 2018 in Newberry, Mich., where her ashes will be buried among her children.
