Hughie Donald McLaren, 91, of Alpena passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Tendercare Alpena.

Hughie was born Jan. 11, 1926 to Charles and Maude (Hamilton) McLaren in Long Rapids Twp., where he grew up and attended school. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII from March of 1944 until May of 1946 when he returned home. Hughie enlisted in the Army in 1947 serving nearly five years with most of it in Korea and the Occupation Forces in Germany. Following his career in the services, he worked in construction for several years in Michigan and other states before returning to the Alpena area in 1977. Hughie was then self-employed before retiring in 1991.

He was a life member of the VFW Post 2496, and a life member of the DAV Post Chapter 51 of Alpena.

Surviving are his son Terry McLaren; three daughters Beth Stobaugh, Jan (Joseph) Doyle, Tonna (James) Nicholls; three step-daughters Gaye Filarski, Jolene Beras, Johnna Paull; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter; Ilene Werth; five brothers Richard, Robert, Gorden, Norman, Calvin; two sisters Irene St. Onge, and Jean Samp-Gagnon.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at McWilliams Funeral Home-Alpena from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Arnie Kirchner officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Post 2496 and the Michigan Army National Guard. Memorial donations can be directed to Hospice of Michigan. Online condolences may be registered at
