What is he thinking?
Tue, May 6, 2008 @ 1:03PM
Apparently the NFL doesn't administer drug tests to the members of the Detroit Lions. One year after he predicted the Lions would win 10 games, and fell well short, Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna didn't learn his lesson and believes the Lions can turn their fortunes around in 2008. ‘‘Our expectation is we will be disappointed if we don’t win 10 games.’’ Those were Kitna's words in an Associated Press story that came out on Tuesday, providing all those who know better a little more comic relief from the Lions signal caller. In fact, out of those of us in the newsroom who looked over Detroit's schedule a couple weeks ago, not a single one had the Lions winning more than four games. Detroit's secondary, linebackers and defensive line still remain suspect, as does the offensive line.

When penny costs more than a penny
Thu, May 8, 2008 @ 7:00PM
Maybe, just maybe, big government does get it. Last week, it was reported that pennies and nickels were worth less than it cost to make them. Currently, pennies cost 1.26 cents to make — a loss of 0.26 cents; nickels currently cost 7.7 cents — a loss of 2.7 cents. Holy wow?!?!?! It almost sounds like buying a car where the minute you drive it off the lot it’s worth less than what you just paid for it. Now that’s a real loss of income. The Associated Press is reporting Thursday that the House voted unanimously on a plan that would change the makeup of the coins to make them worth more than they cost to make. However, every sunny day has the threat of rain. Surprise, surprise, according to the AP story, the Bush administration — and some lawmakers — has objections. First (OK, recently; Bush has been off on plenty) he’s surprised by news that gas might hit $4 a gallon, now he opposes the U.S. mint not going in debt by cutting the cost of producing coins.

Waste not, Want not
Fri, May 2, 2008 @ 4:54PM
Over the past three weeks I have spent a grand total of five days in the office and the rest on the road. In the past 7 days I have gone from nearly one end of the state to the other, from Marquette to Ann Arbor, and logged over 1,200 miles. I share this information both to explain my absence from this spot in recent weeks and because that background inspired a recent editorial and today's blog, where I want to expand on that editorial. That editorial was one promoting the concept of Adopt-A-Highway in our state. Michigan Department of Transportation officials really came up with a winner with that system over 10 years ago and during my travels, I came across many groups of volunteers out cleaning up, or I viewed the bags from their clean-up at various locations. The system really works! That is, the system really works across the U.P. and in northern Michigan. In southern Michigan, I'm not so sure.

Crop for a cause
Mon, April 28, 2008 @ 2:01PM
If you’re into scrapbooking AND helping a worthwhile organization, a special event this Saturday (May 3) will combine an opportunity to do both. The Alzheimer’s Association is teeming up with the Forget-Me-Not Shoppe at the Center Building in downtown Alpena to host a Crop for the Cause benefit. Nearly 20 local businesses have donated items to be given away during the event. Besides great door prizes, participants will enjoy a Chinese raffle, snacks and professionals on hand to answer any scrapbooking questions. Make-n-take classes also will be offered throughout the day. As an avid scrapbooker, I’ve attended previous scrapbooking events at the Forget-Me-Not Shoppe, and can honestly say it’s great fun being around others who share this hobby. Not only do you get uninterupted time to actually complete some scrapbook pages, but seeing the creativity and ideas of others is always inspiring.
