Undersheriff placed on paid leave

ALPENA –An internal investigation at the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office has led to the county’s undersheriff being placed on paid administrative leave, pending the results of the ongoing investigation.

It remained unclear Friday what led to the suspension. The sheriff and other county officials are being tight-lipped on the matter because it is a personnel issue and the investigation is ongoing.

Undersheriff Terry King was placed on paid leave by Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski after a one-on-one meeting Tuesday. King was forced to turn over his badge, firearm, keys, and phone until the matter is resolved.

According to King, he must also avoid contact with any sheriff’s office or other county employees or security personnel at the Alpena Combat Readiness Center, and must not be on any county property unless he is conducting personal business or has permission otherwise.

King confirmed the suspension and investigation Friday, as did county commissioners Brad McRoberts and John Kozlowski, but none were willing to discuss the matter in detail.

“I have no comment, because I don’t know anything, right now,” King said.

“I never comment on personnel issues, no matter who it is,” Kieliszewski said.

King has been employed by the sheriff’s office for nearly 22 years, the last 14 as undersheriff. He is a non-union, salary employee for the county.
