Panel discusses race in NE Michigan

News Photo by Julie Riddle

On Monday night, as part of their 10th anniversary celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. day, Alpena Community College hosted a panel of local residents willing to share their experiences representing a variety of racial backgrounds while living in a mostly white community. Panelists included, from left, John Winckowski, Paige Trisko, Christina Getachew, Elijah Baker, and Adrian Alexander. The panel was moderated by Bill McClure, pastor at Trinity Episcopal Church in Alpena. The group discussed such issues as their preferences for what to call different colors of skin, how it feels to be attacked because of something you can’t control, and why it’s important to talk about race, even if it’s an intimidating topic.
