Former APS teacher arrested on sex assault charges
ALPENA – A former Alpena Public Schools teacher was arrested Wednesday and faces multiple counts of sexual assault.
Court records indicate Heather Winfield, 38, faces charges for assaulting a person younger than 13 and another charge for assaulting a person 13 to 15. The offense date was listed in court records as January 2016.
It isn’t clear from the available records whether those charges relate to one victim or multiple victims or whether the alleged victim or victims are or were students of Winfield’s.
According to a LinkedIn page, Winfield taught at All Saints Catholic Schools and Thunder Bay Junior High School, both in Alpena. The superintendent of Hillman Community Schools said Winfield also served as a substitute teacher in that district.
Winfield denies the charges, according to her attorney, Dan White, who expects her to be released Monday on a $250,000 bond.
The Michigan State Police would not comment today but said a news release will be issued Monday.
APS Superintendent John VanWagoner said today he does “not have a current employee by that name.”
He said the district had reached out to law enforcement and may issue a news release on Monday.
