Board to vote on bond proposal Jan. 30

The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 to vote on a multimillion-dollar bond proposal officials have been discussing for months.

At the meeting, to happen in the Gerry Ludwig Board Room of the district administration building, 2373 Gordon Road, board members are expected to vote on whether to ask voters on the May ballot to OK the sale of up to $63 million in bonds and up to 1.9 mills of new property taxes to repay those bonds over the next 25 years.

Money from the bonds would be used to fund renovations to school buildings throughout the district, with a focus on security upgrades and the demolition and rebuilding of Ella White Elementary School.

The 1.9 mills would cost the owner of a $100,000 house about $95 a year in taxes.
