Local government ROUNDUP

News from Northeast Michigan municipalities this month:

∫ Fundraising continues for the City of Harrisville’s new pocket park, which is to be located off of Main Street between Harbortown Pizza and Richard’s Pharmacy. The small parcel of city-owned property will eventually be transformed into a small park for residents to enjoy.

∫ City of Harrisville officials are waiting to hear whether they received grant funding that would upgrade the playground located at the harbor. The only playground equipment that will remain is the swing set and tire swing. The city asked for $107,800 in funding from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Recreational Passport Grant and expects to learn whether they received the grant by the end of December. The Lady Lions Club raised $25,000 in donations to go toward the project.

∫ The City of Onaway will be submitting a grant application to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to create a trailhead for the city’s Northeastern State Trail. The trail head will be located off of M-211, just north of the city. The Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners granted the city a 50-foot easement that is needed to put a driveway from Lot 10 to Industrial Drive.

∫ The Village of Hillman approved up to $700 in funding to refinish the floors at the Brush Creek Mill. The mill has been open for the past 13 years and its wooden floor is in need of sanding and refinishing, according to village Clerk Brenda South. The Brush Creek Mill Board asked the village for financial assistance for the repairs. Volunteers will be doing the work between Christmas and New Years when the mill is shut down for maintenance.

∫ The Village of Hillman has tabled discussion regarding its recycling service. Greenway was unable to continue its recycling service, so the village switched to Alpena Resource and Recovery. The switch is costing both the Village of Hillman and Hillman Township more than planned. Funding for the recycling program currently comes out of the village’s general fund, and village officials are exploring alternate ways to fund the recycling program. South said the village is still providing the service for residents but officials don’t know how long they can continue to offer it.
