APS posts pictures showing school needs

ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools is in the midst planning for a potential multimillion-dollar tax proposal for repairs and renovations to all of its facilities.

To help the public see the issues that need to be fixed, the district has posted a link on its website directing visitors to a photo gallery with photos from every school showing some of the items district officials say need to be repaired, replaced or upgraded.

In a special meeting on Nov. 26, the APS Board of Education approved an application to the Michigan Treasury that would allow the district to sell up to $66 million in bonds. The district meets with Treasury officials on Tuesday.

Voters would have to approve the sale of the bonds and property owners in the district would repay those bonds over 25 years through a 2-mill property tax increase that would cost the owner of a $100,000 house about $100 per year.

The board has until February to decide whether or not to put the tax proposal before voters on the May ballot.

If the proposal is approved in May, the money would fund renovations to buildings around the district, with the largest projects being major renovations to Alpena High School and a focus on security upgrades to every building.

The district would also tear down Ella White Elementary School and build a new, similarly sized, two-story building. Estimates show building a new school would be cheaper than renovating the existing one. Some of the upgrades that the current Ella White needs are new flooring, an entirely new heating system, and a new public address system.
