Alcona County sets Halloween budget workshop

HARRISVILLE — The Alcona County Board of Commissioners voted on Wednesday to send budget worksheets to county departments so the county can start preparing its 2019 budget.

The board recently held a special meeting to start preparing its budget and determine how they would help departments through the budget process. The county is reevaluating its budget after voters rejected a tax proposal in August; voters will be asked to reconsider the proposal on Nov. 6.

“Our goal was to provide departments with guidance on salaries and insurance costs for the budget,” Board Chair Craig Johnston said. “We have those numbers.”

The board decided to give departments until Oct. 26 to fill out their worksheets for the budget, which would give departments over a week to complete the budget worksheets. The board set a budget meeting for 10 a.m. Oct. 31 to go over the budget worksheets.

For funds that do not include departments, the board will send a different budget worksheet to those people with the Oct. 26 deadline.

The board also made adjustments Wednesday in its budget for the county’s Parks and Recreation budget. Johnston said there are bills left to pay for a building the parks and recreation board is currently building.

“They moved some things around in the budget and they need to balance the rest,” Johnston said.

The board approved a budget amendment of $37,000 for the parks and recreation board to increase the overall funds for 2018. The $37,000 would be a transaction from the fund balance. The expenditures would be from the capital outlay, county treasurer Cheryl Franks said.

“They basically need a budget increase of $37,000, which they’re funding through their fund balance,” Franks said.

Johnston said the parks and recreation board intend to ask for the budget amendment.
