Thunder Bay Arts Council President Monte Jahnke addresses a crowd gathered Friday for the unveiling of six new History of Industry Sculptures. The high-wheel bicycle, created by artist Jake Idema of Alpena, pictured at right beside Jahnke, is located along the Alpena Bi-Path at Washington Park and represents the industries of recreation and tourism. Idema, who attended both Alcona High School and Alpena Community College, used forged steel in making his piece.

Alpena residents Gordon and Vernie Nethercut look at one of the five History of Industry Sculptures installed on the grounds of the Alpena Community College campus. The “helping hands” sculpture, created by artist Scott Stevens of Alpena, represents healthcare and education. A sizable crowd turned out for the unveiling of the new artworks, which is an ongoing project spearheaded by the Thunder Bay Arts Council.
