County hires courthouse cleaners

ATLANTA — The Montmorency County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday voted to hire Stanley Steemer to clean the courthouse building in the next few weeks.

Chairman Daryl Peterson said all hot-air registers, cold-air returns and heat runs, along with seven furnaces, will be cleaned. The work will be done by experienced certified technicians and Stanley Steemer will provide photo documentation of the work completed.

“We had talked about this a few times already,” Peterson said.

The courthouse was evacuated twice in three months earlier this year because of chemical issues when the building was being cleaned. At a meeting on June 13, the commissioners took steps to improve the safety of the building for employees and the public, including contacting the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to complete an air-quality control check.

The cost for Stanley Steemer to clean the courthouse is $2,985 and will be completed on a weekend. The money will come out of the county’s cash reserves.

“They’ll be done pretty quick,” Peterson said. “I imagine it would take most of the day.”

Sheriff Chad Brown said the sheriff’s department is annually cleaned by Stanley Steemer. He asked if the county and sheriff’s office can tag-team on the cleaning and see if it’s cheaper to clean both at the same time.

“I don’t know when our 365 days is up, but it could be something where there’s a discounted price to do two facilities,” Brown said. “I realize that’s a labor issue, but it’s something we do anyway. It generally comes out of our budget.”

Peterson said the county will look into completing both facilities at the same time.
