Pied Piper to apply for REACH grant

ALPENA — The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education recently approved support for a Recognize Everyone’s Abilities and Creative Hearts grant application for Pied Piper School.

REACH is going to give Pied Piper students the opportunity to experience hands-on learning within a professional arts setting with Art in the Loft. The experiences are going to connect students with the world and the program is going to help them explore, share, and support creative expression.

“They’re offering an opportunity for our students at Pied Piper to be a part of a culinary arts program,” Superintendent Scott Reynolds said.

The program is going to promote health and well-being through the juxtaposition of culinary and visual arts. The students are going to balance nutrition, execute the mechanics of recipe preparation, implement effective and artistic presentation, photographically capture images of their culinary artwork, and develop visual representation and organization of images.

Pied Piper students participated in a pilot program of REACH during the winter. Students were able to work on independent living skills and build upon the cooking skills they had learned in the classroom.

Pied Piper Principal Stacy Wentz was in contact with Art in the Loft Executive Director Justin Christensen-Cooper and notified that as part of the grant application, a requirement of board support is provided. There is no financial commitment required from AMA ESD, other than transportation and staffing costs.

Reynolds said it’s a great opportunity to collaborate with Art in the Loft and provide community experiences for the students.

“Our board through their vote showed support for that grant application and we’re excited and very appreciative of Justin and Art in the Loft to give our students that opportunity,” he said.
