Region under snow advisory until 8 p.m.
ALPENA — The Northeast Michigan region is under a winter storm warning until 8 p.m. today. Today’s commute will be impacted by slick roads, especially the back roads, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.
The area has been under a winter storm warning all weekend. This winter storm has involved snow, freezing rain, and extremely high winds and it will continue through today, according to a press release issued by NWS. Additional snowfall is also expected throughout today.
Freezing rain occurred throughout northern Michigan on Sunday and led to some ice accumulation. According to the release, freezing rain could add up to 1/4 of an inch south of M-72. Roads that are untreated are covered in snow or sleet and could be icy in some areas from freezing rain.
A record 7.3 inches of snow fell on Saturday in Alpena, which broke the old record of 3.4 inches that was set in 1928.
“This is the highest ranked ever for that day,” NWS Meteorologist Tim Locker said. “It’s the ninth most ever in Alpena for a day in April.”
The snowfall has had its biggest impact from blowing and drifting snow.
Locker said the average wind gust on Saturday was 30 miles per hour with the highest wind gust being 40 miles per hour. On Sunday, the average wind gust was between 30 and 35 miles per hour with the highest wind gust being 45 miles per hour.
For the weather in upcoming days, Locker said Tuesday is going to be another snowy day, but the area will see a break from the snow starting Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s and low 40s on Wednesday and Thursday.
“The area will finally see a warm up on Friday with temperatures near the 50s,” Locker said.
Temperatures at the end of this week and early next week will be in the low 40s and high 50s.
