Committee approves position changes for deputies

ALPENA — The Alpena County Board of Commissioners Finance Committee approved position changes for a few county sheriff’s deputies.

“We are in the need of correctional positions. It’s something I’ve discussed with the correctional committee some time ago,” Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski said. “With everything we’ve got going at the sheriff’s office we’ve got new staff coming in and the new jail going on we’re in need of these new positions. They’ll assist with the day-to-day operation of the sheriff’s office corrections division specifically. So that we have enough supervisors on our night and day shift we’re requesting four people to be moved to corporal positions. If you approve of this it will cost a little under $10,000. I have the money in my budget to make that move.”

He said the department is in need of a transition team as it makes the move from the old sheriff’s office to the new sheriff’s office.

Commissioner John Kozlowski asked Kieliszewski that since there is a plan to promote those officers does he plan to replace those staff members.

“I don’t anticipate hiring any new positions at this point and time. If I do I’ll come back to personnel and request those positions,” Kieliszewski said.

The motion carried after 4-0 vote in favor of the position changes.
