ACC set to OK ballot language in March

ALPENA — The Alpena Community College Board of Trustees will approve ballot language for the millage renewal during its March meeting. That decision was made during its meeting Wednesday.

“At our next board meeting we have to approve language for the millage renewal. It will be for the August primary. Along with that we have to think of how to organize,” board Chairman John Briggs said.

The millage will be for 10 years and this will be a renewal of the previous millage.

Vice President of Administration and Finance Richard Sutherland said the college will send the language to its lawyer before it’s approved to ensure it’s perfect.

“It’s an opportunity for us to go to the community and give reassurance that we’ve been OK and that we are good stewards. We then can get back to our board discussion as continuation of what we have,” Briggs said.

During the meeting college President Don MacMaster discussed what spring enrollment has looked like.

“Monday of this week was up 1.2 percent in head count, down in 3.5 percent in adjusted contact hours compared to last spring. Dual enrollment is up over 21 percent, Early College is up 15 percent, online courses are up substantially. Continuing students, which is the largest aggregation of contact hours that we have, was down 7.5 percent; average contact hours per student dropped from 8.86 to 8.45,” he said.

In terms of direct credit there were 410 students from Alpena County, 149 from Iosco County and 75 from Alcona.

“That’s a substantial increase from last year. When you factor with direct credit we have over 2,000. Overall right about where we expected to be,” he said.
