Lunch-n-Learn topics focus on vaccinations, falls and medications

The MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena Community Outreach Committee will offer a Lunch-n-Learn Series this winter focusing on a variety of topics. The one-hour programs begin at 12 p.m. in the hospital auditorium. The cost, which includes lunch, is $7 per session or $20 for the series.

The following topics will be featured in January and February:

∫ Tuesday: Vaccinations — Why You Need to Get Your Shots

Vaccines have been heralded as one the greatest achievements of modern civilization. Childhood diseases that were once commonplace less than a generation ago are now increasingly rare because of vaccines. In this Lunch-n-Learn, Eric Hansen, N.P., will examine the benefits adult vaccines have in preventing complications from Hepatitis B, tetanus, shingles, influenza and pneumonia.

∫ Feb. 6: Goals to Fight Falls and Fractures

One in two women and one in four men over 50 will sustain bone fractures caused by osteoporosis. Many of these are painful fractures of the hip, spine, wrist, arm, and leg, which often occur as a result of a fall. In this Lunch-n-Learn, Orthopedic Surgeon Eric Cornish, M.D. and DeeAnna Kenny, P.A.-C., will provide education on how to prevent osteoporosis through simple diet and exercise changes to help both bone and overall health.

∫ Feb. 20: Affording Your Medications

The news has many reports about pharmaceutical companies and drug pricing. However, consumers often don’t talk to their health care providers about the cost of medicines prescribed or if there are less costly alternatives available. Laura Caplis, Pharm D., will help attendees of this Lunch-n-Learn program sort through the world of prescription medications.

Early registration for the Lunch-n-Learn Series programs are encouraged as space is limited. Those interested in registering may call 356-7738 or email ann.diamond@midmichigan.org.
