VanWagoner receives positive review from school board

ALPENA — On Monday, the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education completed its annual evaluation of Superintendent Dr. John VanWagoner with an “effective” performance or better in all categories.

Board members had the opportunity to assess VanWagoner’s performance in five different areas of professional practice, including governance and board relations, community relations, staff relations, budget and finance, and instructional leadership.

The evaluation was facilitated by Dr. Rick Diebold from the Michigan Association of School Boards. All seven board members participated in the process.

Thirty-three different areas of VanWagoner’s performance during 2017 were considered, using a rubric developed by MASB and based on the requirements of the revised school code of the State of Michigan. The rubric provided examples of performance at each of four different levels: ineffective, minimally effective, effective, and highly effective.

A superintendent who is considered to be “doing the job well” receives a rating of “effective.” along with the occasional “highly effective” rating.

VanWagoner prepared an extensive portfolio, providing evidence of his performance in each area being assessed. He met with each board member individually prior to meeting with the entire board and facilitator on Monday.

In a press release, the board stated it was pleased to report that VanWagoner’s performance during 2017 is considered to be “effective” or better in each of the thirty-three areas. He attained a “highly effective” rating in 26 categories, including all of the budget and finance category. Strengths included visibility and professional knowledge.

The board voted to adopt the 2017 evaluation.
