NEMCSA hopes event will help public facing foreclosure
ALPENA — Organizers with the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency hope an upcoming event will help the people who may be facing a potential home foreclosure.
On Thursday, Step Forward Michigan, the Alpena County Treasurers Office and NEMCSA will host the event, which will run from 2-5 p.m. at the NEMCSA annex building.
NEMCSA Housing and Client Services Director Valerie Williams said the event has been held, and will be held, in several counties in the NEMCSA areas. She said the event is information and all are welcome to attend. Upcoming events will be held in Oscoda and Crawford counties.
In addition to Step Forward Michigan there also will be two financial coaches from NEMCSA, she said.
“This is for people who are delinquent on their property taxes or mortgages. They can talk about foreclosure preventive steps to connect them with resources in the community to keep them from losing their home,” she said.
Williams said the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, which operates Step Forward Michigan, is funded to look at circumstances and situations as well as life scenarios that could result in people becoming delinquent on property taxes and mortgage payments.
She said there will be information from that department on different mortgage assistance programs.
Williams said part of the program is to let the public know there are options during foreclosure.
“It’s ridiculous how many people lose their homes due to delinquent taxes and mortgages, there are so many methods and ways we can work with banks, credit unions, and county treasures to advocate, and we’re pretty successful in that,” she said. “This is definitely something we need to get the word out about it, this time of year is a good time of year because people are getting that last statement before potential foreclosure sales.”
