APS interviewing construction management companies

ALPENA — The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education Property Committee started interviewing candidates for construction management services on Monday.

The committee conducted interviews with Rockford Construction, R.C. Hendrick & Son, and Spence Brothers.

Rockford Construction’s presentation was done by Executive Vice President Jennifer Boezwinkle, Senior Project Manager Steve Orlando, Superintendent Jeff Sawyer and Preconstruction Manager Mark Haverkamp. Rockford Construction told the committee it has completed over 130 education projects over the last five years.

R.C. Hendrick & Son’s presentation was conducted by Chip Hendrick, Trace Hendrick and Dan La Pan. R.C. Hendrick & Son is the most experienced construction company in Michigan. The construction management firm has worked on past projects in Alpena. Chip Hendrick told the committee it is here to build a relationship with APS.

Spence Brothers’ presentation was conducted by Bob Spence, Tom Bennett, John Galnares and Wayne Hoffman.

Each firm told the committee there would be options for students to learn what is going or to tour the sites while construction is taking place.

The committee asked the construction management firms questions so it can have feedback in order to pick a construction management firm that can help the school district.

Superintendent John VanWagoner told the construction management firms on Monday the board of education is hoping to make a decision on a firm to help with construction management services before the holidays.

The committee will conduct interviews today with Wolgast Corporation and Wieland.
