Veterans Benefit Fair helps vets with choosing care, providers

HILLMAN — Northern Michigan Veterans Coalition and the Hillman Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a Veterans Benefit Fair on Thursday.

The event allowed veterans the ability to find benefits that are available in the area or explore new services they are eligible to receive. Service providers had the opportunity to provide outreach to veterans and the service providers could network with other service providers.

“We have various service providers here who are all trying to help the vets,” chamber President Jim Paczkowski said. “This is our second annual event. People come up from Detroit and Saginaw and help the veterans with whatever they can do.”

NMVC creates awareness about the needs of, and benefits available to, veterans and their families by promoting communication, coordination and collaboration.

“We are considered a veteran community action team,” NMVC Vice President Wendy VonDoloski said. “We travel around 11 counties that we cover and host events every couple of months.”

The purpose of NMVC is to sponsor and encourage opportunities for veterans in northern Michigan. NMVC covers 11 counties in the area.

“It’s very helpful,” Paczkowski said. “They never know about the services that are provided unless they are here. We got several service providers that have never been here before.”

The event was supported by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.

“We like to have the event around Veterans Day,” Paczkowski said. “There are a lot of things going on on Veterans Day so we like to have it early.”
