Hillman students collect coins for hurricane relief

HILLMAN –Through the month of December, Hillman Elementary School will be hosting a coin drive to raise money for schools that were affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

“We usually do a gift exchange or give back every year,” teacher Gina Robertson said. “We’ve been talking about giving back since we did a gift exchange last year.”

The school has given back locally to the animal shelter and wanted to do something to help the schools that have been affected by the hurricanes.

“When we did some research, we found that WE Schools was doing a fundraiser to support schools, teachers, and students in those areas, so we applied to help,” Robertson said. “When we figure out the amount that we raised, the Allstate Foundation, which is a part of our fundraiser, will match what we raise.”

Each teacher throughout the school will have a container in their classroom for students to put their coins in. The fundraiser is running from Dec. 1 to Dec. 22 and the donations will be dispersed between Hurricanes Harvey and Irma to the schools, teachers, and students that were affected.

“Students can bring whatever they want from home, whether it’s coins or dollars,” Robertson said. “Whatever funds they want to bring in.”

The school has already received a $250 donation for the fundraiser, which Robertson said is awesome.

“We haven’t told parents yet, so that donation was just from the board meeting on Monday when we told the board about the fundraiser,” Robertson said. “We’re excited to see how much we can raise to impact the schools, teachers, and students that were impacted by the hurricanes.”
