Hillman elementary students to participate in Science Olympiad program

HILLMAN– A Science Olympiad team has been formed at Hillman Elementary School to get students more involved with science and STEM related activities.

Hillman Elementary was asked by the Alpena elementary schools if they wanted to join Science Olympiad. Teachers Gina Robertson and Crystal Vogt went to a Science Olympiad training to learn more about the activities the students participate in and how the activities are completed.

“We had a science night a couple weeks ago and the students got to try the different activities out,” Robertson said. “We got to see how their brains were working and they got to see what kinds of activities there would be.”

After the science night, 15 students, ranging from third to fifth grade, were selected to be on the team.

“We have a variety of ages on the team,” Robertson said. “We’re meeting at the end of this month to go over the different events and activities and prep the students for the Science Olympia in February.”

The different activities that students will be taking part in are the straw egg, energy boxes, mystery boxes, activities that go with learning about anatomy, along with many others. There are about 16 different activities that the students will be participating in.

Robertson said that the activities are related to STEM with lots of engineering and design built in the activities.

“That’s the way of the world now,” she said. “We need people in those areas so this is going to help branch those areas that the students need for the future.”
