HHS fundraiser takes public into historic apartments

ALPENA — Organizers with the Huron Humane Society hope the first ever Home for the Howlidays fundraiser event will continue for years to come.

Event Co-chair Cindy Johnson said Saturday’s event will feature tours of holiday decorated properties in the downtown area.

“We will feature six historic apartments in the downtown area that people can tour,” Johnson said. “Tickets for the event are $20 and available at Real Estate One, Re-Tails Boutique, WATZ, 45 Art Gallery, As You Wish and The Marketplace.”

She said tickets also can be purchased from members of the humane society board and all proceeds will go to the continued operation of the animal shelter.

Johnson said organizers decided to create the event because of the interest in historic Alpena buildings.

“A lot of people are curious about the apartments and a lot of people don’t even know that people live downtown. It’s a great way to show people what goes on downtown besides businesses and restaurants because people actually live downtown in neat apartments,” she said.

One apartment that will be featured is that of Jack Davidson who lives on the top floor of the Elk Building, Johnson said.

“People can tour from apartment to apartment and a lot of the downtown businesses are offering discounts to ticket holders and we have more than 60 items that we’ll raffle and pull tickets at the after party,” Johnson said.

That event is scheduled to be held at the Fletcher Street Depot from 7-9:30 p.m. and is open to the public. More information about the event can be found by visiting www.huronhumanesocietyinc.org.

Johnson said it was relatively easy to get people to open up their homes to help the shelter.

“Most everyone that we asked accepted, in fact someone asked to be on it so we added them, they are excited to show their apartments,” she said.
