Architecture firm on campus to meet with ACC staff

ALPENA — The architecture firm in charge of renovations to Alpena Community College’s Van Lare Hall have been on campus for two weeks to meet with college staff.

College President Don MacMaster said the firm has been on campus to meet with those affected by the future renovations to the hall.

Facilities Manager Nick Brege updated the ACC Board of Trustees on the project at the regular meeting Wednesday.

“Last week was the first of a series of user group meetings for the affected stakeholders of the project. The first being IT and facilities. Looking at infrastructure of the building and space needs for those departments, general instruction and other faculty, then of course the nursing program which will be the major focus. Lastly, a steering committee; an executive committee for the project that has a final say on how the space will look. Things like the exterior, the new additions, the way we restore the exterior, and the purpose and size of the spaces,” Brege said.

From here Cornerstone (the architecture firm) will take the information back from the meetings Brege said.

These meetings will help determine how much space will be dedicated to the nursing department, how much will be flexible classroom and multi-purpose space. It will also help determine what the potential additions will look like.

“When they come back to us we’ll see what they’ve assigned to the groups and make sure it aligns with strategic direction of the project, have additional feedback and input from additional user groups as I mentioned. We’ll do this about four times; four iterations until we get this ironed out,” Brege said.

At the end of January they hope to have the schematic phase done Brege added.

“Which would provide all the assignable square footages, gross to net ratios, all the metrics the state wants to look at to make sure our project is using resources effectively,” Brege said.

Also at the end of January they will have some renderings of the renovation design. Between now and then they will bring on construction managers, because they will go out for proposals. These proposals will be ready in December, Brege said.
