Alpena VFW Post to host fundraiser event Saturday

ALPENA — In an effort to raise money for the the Alpena Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2496, organizers are holding a raffle and other events Saturday to coincide with Veterans Day.

Post member Danielle Hunter is organizing the event that will take place at the post building beginning at 12p.m.

“Dan Agar and Friends is the band that will be performing from 1-5 p.m. We are open to the public including the lounge and we are going to be serving food,” she said.

Hunter said the raffle will take place from 12-8 p.m. and is comprised of items donated generously by area businesses and organizations.

“Snap-On gave us $7,850 worth of items. We have a $350 cast iron Kobota peddle tractor for kids, a pool stick from Emery’s, lots of gift certificates and jewelry,” she said. “We just have so much.”

Other items include gift certificates to area restaurants, auto parts stores and other organizations all donated to the VFW for the raffle.

Hunter said the public can come and buy raffle tickets that can be stuffed into buckets near the items. She said a drawing for the items will take place at 8 p.m. Members of the public do not have to be in attendance at the drawing to win prizes, she said.

“We are selling one ticket for $1, five tickets for $3 and 24 tickets for $10,” Hunter said. “If you really want something you put in several tickets for a chance to win.”

Although there is not a fundraising goal, Hunter said if all the tickets were sold the post could generate $7,500, which will be put into the organization’s Veterans Relief Fund, which currently is out of money.

Hunter said she wanted to organize the event after she learned there were no funds in the account, which is used to help out area veterans in financial hardships.

“If a veteran came into the VFW saying they were having trouble paying their power bill, we would give them money to get it paid, but without any money we have to turn people away,” she said.

Hunter, who is a veteran, said she was compelled to make it so the post could continue to help veterans and said if the event is successful it will continue year to year.

“In simple terms our veterans helped everyone else. Our veterans helped people who either wanted to join the military and couldn’t and didn’t want to,” she said. “Veterans helped people whether people realized it or not. We should help them and this is the community’s way of doing so.”
