Autumn Light Festival offers visitors a unique opportunity

PRESQUE ISLE TWP. — It’s not every day people have permission to throw things from the top of a lighthouse.

But, the public will be able to do so during the Autumn Lights Festival from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse Park.

One of the events for the festival is a cookie toss fundraiser.

Organizer and Presque Isle Township Treasurer Jennifer Wieczorkowski said the fundraiser should be a sight to see.

“For the cost to climb the lighthouse, which is $3. People will get a package of cookies and at the top of the lighthouse toss it off toward various targets,” she said.

The different targets have a theme and there may be small prizes.

She said this is the second year for the event and organizers wanted it to continue as a farewell to the season. She said it’s the last weekend the lighthouse is open and the festival is a combination of the fundraiser and community event.

“Lighthouses are in need for perpetual care. They’re wonderful assets, but they do need funding. We want to make sure we maintain those assets. We will be going for grants in the future but we need matching funds, so the fundraiser helps with those match funds,” she said.

The other events for the festival will be free, she said.

“Maple Valley Stables will have horse-drawn carriage rides. They’re going to have a small petting zoo. If the weather permits we’ll have music. We will have a couple crafts. We’ll have pumpkins they can decorate,” she said.

There also will be a chili cook-off.

“It will be a people’s choice kind of thing,” she said.

There also will be hot dogs, cider and doughnuts.

She said organizers are excited for the event and look to do more of them in the future.

“It’s a great event for families. It’s a great way to see all of our colors and going through Grand Lake Road,” she said.

The lighthouse is located at 4500 E. Grand Lake Rd. in Presque Isle Township.
