Aliferis race raises more than $20K

More than 200 cyclists, runners and walkers of all ages from across the state turned out to participate in one or more of four events of the 16th annual Aliferis Memorial Race. Hosted by the MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena Development Council Business Relations, this year’s event raised more than $20,000, putting the cumulative total up over $425,000.

All funds are used locally for student scholarships and technology and patient care initiatives at the Medical Center.

Honorary Chairs Ken and Marie Dully participated in the biking events then passed out medals for the top finishers in each event, as well as trophies for overall top performances. A drawing was held for two pairs of University of Michigan football game tickets.

The Aliferis Memorial Race was named in memory of longtime Alpena General Hospital pathologist Peter Aliferis, M.D., in appreciation of his many contributions during his 37 years at the hospital and his steadfast dedication to health and wellness. Aliferis retired in July 2000 and passed away from cancer March 13, 2002.
