Biggby Coffee to open in Alpena

ALPENA — There is going to be a new addition to the Alpena downtown area in the coming months, as Biggby Coffee announced it has signed a lease agreement to open a store on the corner of Chisholm Street and State Avenue.

The store will be owned by Jeff Konczak and his franchise partner Nick Spadafore, who also owns the popular coffee shop in Gaylord.

Konczak said the two men formed a new company and the Biggby Coffee in Alpena and Petoskey will run as part of it.

Konczak said when he purchased the corner lot, which was home to the former Summit Sports, he knew the locations needed a pinnacle brand that people recognized and was popular, He said the location is perfect, but there was a lack of parking, so he also purchased the Miller Building, which is adjacent to where the new coffee shop will open, and he intends to clear the lot for parking.

“The location at the corner is fantastic,” Konczak said. “People slow down there and can look around. It is right in a high traffic area with good exposure, with a lot of foot traffic. The only issue was parking, but I had a plan going into this and it won’t be an issue when it’s complete.”

Konczak said he is pleased to bring Biggby to Alpena, because not only is the product and service top notch, but also the company’s values and high standards.

“All you have to do is read the company’s moto and it says it all,” he said.

The moto for Biggby Coffee is “B Happy, Have Fun, Make Friends, Love People and Drink Great Coffee.”

Once the building is converted to the coffee shop, Konczak said there will be outdoor dining available. He said he and Spadafore also are exploring further growth of their franchise and hope to open more stores in Michigan.

He said for now though his focus is to make the needed improvements to the building, address the parking issue and get it ready for customers.

“Typically it takes about a year to open a store, but we are going to be pushing hard to have it open by the end of the year,” Konczak said.
